About the Book
This publication is a testimonial of how little public information exists on the physical properties and conditioning requirements of seed. For many crop seed, the only information exists in the heads or files of specific persons or companies who are in the business of producing, cleaning and handling seed.
This manual is intended to help seed conditioners by:
• Providing as much available information as possible, as an assist to persons who are in the business, or to persons who would like to get into the business.
• Encouraging researchers, seed conditioners, and others with information, to make their information known. They will not suffer by doing so; in fact, it will call attention to seed quality requirements, and help them!
• Promoting the study of seed physical characteristics by researchers and graduate students on seed physical properties and conditioning needs. This area can provide many excellent research projects, thesis programs, and special studies.
It is hoped that seed conditioners will use the record formats provided in Seed Conditioning Volume I, Management, and here, to build their own records of what worked to remove specific contaminants from their crop seed. Such information will enable them to save time, reduce conditioning costs, and reduce seed losses.
